A: In growing season, expect shallow rooting in 10 to 14 days and solid establishment in about 4 to 6 weeks. You should not be able to lift a corner by hand after two weeks. Dormant winter installs root slowly and establish in spring.
Q: How much should I water new sod?
A: Daily for the first two weeks, enough to keep the soil beneath the sod damp rather than the surface wet. Taper to every other day in week three, then move to a normal deep and infrequent schedule. Most new sod that fails, fails from watering, and it is entirely avoidable. We walk you through it before we leave.
Q: Do you remove the old grass first?
A: Yes. On a full installation we remove existing turf and weeds rather than laying over the top. Sod laid over old grass roots poorly and the weeds come back through it.
Q: Can I install sod myself?
A: Yes, and we deliver sod on its own if you want to. Be honest with yourself about the prep, though. The laying is the easy part. Removing old turf, correcting grade and preparing soil is the work, and it is what determines whether the lawn lasts.
Q: How soon can we walk on it?
A: Keep traffic off for the first two weeks while it roots. Light foot traffic after that. Hold off on heavy use, pets running on it, and play equipment until about week four.
